Abstract: Technological development in agriculture is very essential in increasing the productivity of the land. Among other technologies, it involves mechanization of agriculture through the use of improved machinery. Harvesting operation is one of the most labor consuming operation. Traditional harvesting operations needs 100 labors/fed/day for mowing, field drying, binding, transportation and threshing. Grain losses due to these operations are too high in addition to the poor quality of the grains. Combine harvesters represent a possible solution for these problems. Since many types and makes of combine harvesters are being used in Egypt, the aim of this study is to evaluate the performance and modification of the “Zhu Jiang-1.5” Chinese combine winnowing unit. The main results in this study can be summarized as follow: The performance and efficiency of cleaning and separation increased from 75% to 95% for rice crop and from 40% to 90% for wheat crop. Grain losses decreased from 15.2% to 3.06% for rice and from 23.25% to 8% for wheat. The separation efficiency reached to 94.35% for rice and 83.64% for wheat. As well as efficiency reach to 92.6% for rice and 90% for wheat, machine energy requirement reached 7.98 MJ/ton for rice and 7.68 MJ/ton for wheat, and the combine operation costs reached 43.6 LE/h.
