Integrated Pest Management Expert System

Abstract: This work presents an expert system that gives recommendations to extensions and growers for managing the pests by biological, chemical and agricultural operations. The main objective of this work is to minimize the pesticides used in controlling the pests.

The problem is that, when a certain crop is affected by many pests*, the chemical operations may contain some pesticides for controlling some pests, the effects of these pesticides can be abstracted to one pesticide with the same effect. The abstraction can be achieved by one of two methods, the first method is adapting the knowledge representation to achieve the abstraction, the second method is establishing an algorithm and using a simple knowledge representation. The first method makes the knowledge representation more complicated and difficult during the development. The second method simplifies the knowledge representation and is more accurate. This expert system can be used for many crops after adding the domain knowledge for the underlined crop. The algorithm is the same for all crops. This work has been applied on fababean crop and gave good results.
